Here at the 2010Reno Air Races. The announcer said the F18 that was going to fly past will be just short of Mach 1. When he went by, the BOOM BOOM was loud and clear, he had broken the sound barrier. What a thrill! I was abler to record the action on the iPhone 4. Here's the link to the video:

1967 Vacation

In the Fall (or Winter) of 1967, the family trekked across the country to New York, Ohio, and the like to see family and the United States. We even went in the Empire State Building when it was the tallest building in the world! We saw the Niagra Falls, Great Crater, New York City, Grand Canyon...and more. I still have vivid memories of the trip and these slides help. Additionally, we met up with our family in Chicago. Great pictures of the cousins!

When I look at all the pictures of the past, it makes me realize how good life is. Thinking of both Grandparents (even Great-Grandma), Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and friends over the last 50 years makes me realize I’ve been blessed and surrounded by great people. This album is of pictures taken throughout 1959, some in Florida (I have no idea why...mom/dad do you have any idea who they are and why Florida?), some in Akron, Ohio, and some who knows. 1962 was a fine year. We drove across the country to Ohio in a Ford Falcon (without seat-belts and lived). I noticed that all of Grandma Kay’s pictures shows her smoking cigarettes. She smoked non-stop till she was about 95 then forgot she smoked after Dawn (seen in one of the pictures as a baby) hid them from her.

Good news, the old camera takes video. Bad news--no sound. So imaging a little girl laughing her head off, belly laughing the whole time, while I toss her in the air and let her “swim.” She did this for a good 20 minutes non stop. We all loved it.

My aunt wrote to confirm what we suspected that her old house, and all the houses around it (including my grandparent’s old house on Tunnel Rd are gone due to the Santa Barbara fire. We have a lot of cherished memories on the hill growing up. Mom grew up there and we would go there quite often growing up. Below are some pictures of us young ones at the house. (I’m the lazy one on the chair...)

Paul's Motorcycle Accident

We’re counting our many blessings that Paul wasn’t hurt more than he was after being struck by a car on the freeway this morning. Other than a heavily bruised and strained back, deep arm laceration, and broken ankle, he's doing ok with the pain killers.

Interesting how it played out from my perspective: Jim Bolt calls me on the way to a funeral saying he’s looking at a pretty bad motorcycle accident on the freeway as he precedes to describe the damage. While talking to Jim, Sandy calls me so I tell Jim she’s calling and I take the call. She proceeds to tell me Paul’s been in a motorcycle accident and we need to go to the hospital right away (not knowing his condition). I call Jim back to let him know that the accident he saw was Paul and to pray. He told me later that he immediately pulled off on the side of the freeway to pray.

So, for a moment, I’m thinking the worse (Jim’s description was not promising...) and am simply perplexed as to what to do or think. Then it occurs to me to simply call Paul and see what happens. I call and he answers! He tells me he’s in an ambulance being taken to Holy Cross, that he’s in lot’s of pain but basically all right, considering. Phew. I then call Sandy to let her know and off we went to the hospital.

Sandy and I went to a dinner party in Pasadena celebrating Noble Trenham’s trip around the world fifty years ago (1959-1962). They drove 80,000 miles for a total distance of 110,000 miles (including the water trips), hitting all 6 Continents. What a story they told (he went with one other person). They brought the truck for display. This is kind of like our trip in 1976 across the western United States...right guys?

Viva La Mexico!

Sandy and I had a great time on a Princess Cruise to Mexico for the last 7 days. From Zipping on cables though the valleys of Puerto Vallarta, para-sailing in Mazatlan, and snorkling in Cabo San Lucas, good times were had by all. One large surprise was finding my parents on the same cruise! They planned to surprise us and they did at that.

Baby Yorkshire

The last few days have been touch and go with the fires in California. At one point the fire was only about 4 miles away. We had helicopter after helicopter fly right over the house tenaciously fighting the fire, they seemed to have won. Here are some quick pictures taken near the house.

In all my free time, I've been experimenting with new applications for the iPhone. I just downloaded this one that tracks my path and I take pictures along the way. It records the path and where the pictures were taken. I only had it for 5 minutes when I decided to walk down the hill and try it out. Here is the result. I turned around and it has me going through backyards, but close enough!

Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial

I'm at the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial, it's quite sobering. Inside
there are several artifacts and videos of survival/rescuer stories and
videos. They have parts of the Rider Truck, memorial pictures and
stories of the dead. I'm glad I made the trip.

Today my morning was spent at the 45th Infantry Division of Oklahoma. I was actually impressed with their collection and spent at least and hour and a half there reading and looking at the collection. My favorite part was the actual write-ups and models of the Medal of Honor recipients. They even had a lot of Hitler’s stuff taken during his last days.

Fire on Google Earth

So, the red area is the evacuation zone and where the fire is going. Latest is that it may jump I 5 freeway eastbound and work it’s way up to Santa Clarita when the winds shift northward. The 4.77 mile line is from our house to the center of the fire. (Did I ever mention that I love Google Earth?

PS, it’s interesting watching a fire from Oklahoma City.

At 3:35pm this afternoon, Walt Fuller (Tower Manager of Burbank Tower--my ex-boss) and I had a discussion before exchanging good-byes, and, he left for the train to go home. It is 2:00am and no one has heard from him. His wife has not heard from him. The Metrolink Train collided with a freight train and he is missing. Our prayers go out to the family and Walt. We can only hope for the best, that he is discovered this evening.

UPDATE: Please pray for the family and friends of Walt Fuller as he has passed away in the train.

Pismo, Good Times

Three days after retirement we spent the week on the beach at Pismo Beach. Our friends have a couple of Honda Pilots (the dune buggies) and we had a great time riding the dunes of Pismo. What a way to transition to the semi-retired life! Click here for more pics.

Officially Retired from Air Traffic

It started in Oklahoma City, Alicia being 1 1/2 years old and Paul 6 months, 1985. There they “screen” new hires to see if they have the right stuff to be a controller and I passed. From there it was Oakland Center for about 5 years working radar (even got to control the SR-71 and U2 often). Then it was off to Palo Alto Tower for a couple of years. By now Kyle was born and life long friends established (Alicia and Paul’s kindergarten teacher, Anne, and her husband Max), it was off to Southern California at Burbank Approach Control (now part of Southern California Approach Control in San Diego). Santa Monica Tower after that for 4 years.

Finally to Burbank Tower in 1997 (with a stint at LAX in between). Controlling planes and supervising crews has been an absolute joy. Although I’m going to miss the action greatly, moving on to other challenges will be equally fun and challenging. Right now I’ll be instructing new controllers in a classroom and simulator setting for the time being with WCG (Washington Consultant Group).

Change in the air

I’m in the “seriously contemplating FAA retirement” mode. A company (WCG) is offering me an instructional position with them to train new air traffic controllers. The pay is good, the job is rewarding, and the stress free work is intriguing. I would most likely be done with the FAA August 31 and be working for WCG September 1. My office is still at Burbank Tower with occasional trips to Los Angeles where they are building a Air Traffic Control Tower Simulator. I will help develop simulations for several towers (included other towers I’ve work--LAX and Santa Monica) including Burbank. No final decision, but I’m putting the paperwork in to get the ball rolling. Hours are flexible, fellow instructors are retired friends, and more opportunities can develop with this move. More to follow....

Time to leave Louisville, KY. While at the airport drinking Starbuck's finest, we ran into Larry Birkhead (Dannielynn's father...aka Anna Nichol Smith's baby). Although Dannielynn is beautiful and an exact image of Anna, she isn't near as pretty as Penelope Jane.

I took a few pictures from afar, but none of them good. Nevertheless here's one.
